there's a new kid in town

First of all I must say that I really did have this blog entry all planned in my head before I read Kim's latest blog entry. It is not intended as a rebuttal or argument or anything even vaguely resembling an attempt at controversy.

Having said that...roll over Wii Fit, and meet the future of active video games!

Rather than a heavy, somewhat finicky balance board, this game comes with a plastic mat to step on. In the interest of full disclosure, there are two down points to the mat. The first is, it has to be plugged in to the console. Secondly, it tends to slid around a bit on carpet, but I've found that putting my yoga mat under the Wii mat helps to eliminate that.

This game is much easier than the Wii Fit to just turn on and get started. It doesn't want to weigh me every time I step on it . It makes no snide remarks about my weight being up since the last time, and then turn right around and comment that it's perfectly normal for weight to fluctuate a few pounds each day.

The games...oh, the games! Basically, they are running and jumping. Which gets the heart rate up just a little. A little? For an aerobic workout, there is just no comparison to the Wii Fit. The only games on Wii Fit to get my heart rate up reasonably well were the hula-hooping (hard on the knees!) and the jogging. But playing this game is like circuit training. I can choose a jumping game that will get me huffing and puffing for a few minutes and then pick something slightly easier to bring my heart rate back down a bit.

There is free play, with a wide variety of games, from a marathon to a sprint, to log jumping and trampolining. Then there are "challenges", which are games put together in packages entitled, "Endurance", "Jumping", "Easy" (Easy? I think not!), and so on,  which run for about 5 minutes.

Even my 4yo can enjoy these games. He is just not steady enough to use the balance board of Wii Fit, but he sure can run and jump on this one.

I have heard that this is just the first in a series of Active Life games. Bring them on! This is active video gaming at its best.

  This is so funny!  Video games to help get people in shape. They are targeted to kids, but parents are jumping, no pun intended, all over it. I have never played Levi's video game. Maybe I should have him bring it out of his room and hook it up.

Oh, my 3 yo has a lot of fun with the wii fit. He can't do all of it, but he still enjoys it.
I, for one, am glad for the less *bouncy* exercise of the wii fit. It doesn't sound like my belly could handle what you describe ... We might get your Outdoor Adventure for the family for Christmas, but for now, we like the wii fit quite a bit. :)
